As part of the government shutdown, national parks and Federal buildings were closed down Tuesday. But the metal barricades that blocked access to the World War II Memorial proved of little consequence to a group of WWII veterans from Mississippi on an Honor Flight tour.“We didn’t come this far not to get in,” one veteran told Stars and Stripes.
So, aided by a few Congressmen and their staffs — including Representative Steve King (R-Iowa) who distracted a Park Police representative — the vets simply pushed the barriers aside and went in, ignoring Park Police instructions not to enter.
Jeff Sipos "At Nuremburg the Nazi guards claimed they were just following orders, they were convicted and held accountable for their actions. The guards here are in a similar situation, do what those in power tell you and play it safe, or do what is right and gladly face the consequences. I know what they should do but will we the people back them or join in lockstep with a corrupt government. This is not the country our forefathers died for, we should be ashamed of what we have allowed to happen on our watch. We the people need to get involved in our own government, remove the professional politician by eliminating the possibility of reelection, take all benefits away ounce out of office and return service to rhe job description. Our constitution was written to prevent the formation of a ruleing class, this has been subverted over time and sanity must be restored."
